Searching for a new job is a bit lonely, and full of ups and downs – the excitement of getting an interview, the discouragement of not hearing back from an employer, the confidence-building that comes from having a great informational or networking meeting, the fear over how long it is taking to find that “right fit” job.

In my own searches (one of which took 2 long years), I found it very helpful to have some reminders and affirmations that I was on the right path, that I would eventually find a job that suited me.  Now I pass these on to people I help with their searches.  Here are some of my favorites:

  1. I have done all I can with this employer. It’s now up to the universe.
  2. If it’s the right job for me, I will get a call.
  3. I have confidence that I put out my best effort.
  4. I know deep down that I will get the right job for me.
  5. I am getting closer to my desired job.
  6. The more specific I am about what I want to do, the closer I am to getting it.
  7. I am gathering information about my industry and field, information that helps me get clear about exactly what I want to do.
  8. I am doing all I can to find the right job.
  9. I am open to new ideas about where to find my “right fit” job.
  10. I ask for help and suggestions from people who are experts.
  11. I take breaks from my search to rest, have fun, take a walk, and rejuvenate my spirit.
  12. I have a unique set of skills and abilities that will be incredibly valuable to the right employer.

Use these to restore your perspective, to give yourself encouragement when you are feeling down, to remind yourself of things you are doing.  And to remember that you are not your job search.

Much of job search is out of your control.  So change what you can change – your own attitude toward yourself.  This is called “self-leadership” – deciding how you want to feel about yourself and then taking action to feel that way.  Affirmations are a great tool for self-leaders.
